Another early start on Sunday June 7th saw nine intrepid One Lifers set off for Woodhorn near Ashington for a mornings racing in the nice, warm and clear weather.
Not a bit of it !! As soon as the Ashington spine road homed into view the skies darkened the clouds gathered then the heavens opened !!
Undeterred by the weather (except for Richard who admits he did consider going straight home !), everyone resolved to give it their best and enjoy the day the best they could.
The 750m open water swim set off in three waves with novices off first, then the ladies and finally everybody else….
The water temperature was surprisingly mild and it proved that the swim leg was the most enjoyable for most of the team.
I managed to exit the water first after a slight detour (it helps if you know your left from your right !) and rushed into T1 where I promptly lost my race number in the act of removing my wetsuit, a kindly marshal helped me re attach it but the seconds were ticking away…
The bike leg began and so did the heaviest rain of the day, although the course was mainly flat the wind did cause a few concerns but these were outweighed by the floods !! so it was steady as she goes around all the corners and roundabouts and fortunately none of the team suffered any tumbles or scares.
Again I managed to clock the quickest bike leg giving me a nearly three minute lead going in to the run, I needed it because as I set off I realised that I had zero feeling in my feet meaning I felt a bit like Scooby Doo with a crazy cadence and didn’t manage to settle into a rhythm until half way round the second (and final) lap.
I managed to cross the line first with a 1min 35sec advantage over Rob West who’s having a good season since becoming a vet40 so his performance also won him his category.
The rest of the team also did reall well, Rob, Richard and me recorded the three fastest run splits of the day and I managed the quickest swim and bike, another coup for One Life at the expense of TRI
Stuart was the fifth vet40 and Richard ninth, Claire had a good race as usual coming in second place in the Female vet40 category, Jan and Rose took the top two positions in the vet50 category
Brendon also had a good race and would have been a lot faster had he not decided that his bike computer and watch needed re programming at the bike mount line and that the appropriate attire for the bike and run consisted of about twelve layers (stopping to unlock the v
Unfortunately there was a technical hitch with the results meaning there was no presentation as such but WELL DONE EVERYONE !! and I hope you are all dried off by now !
Well done to everyone who competed at the weekend. There were some remarkable results and performances from One Lifers accross the board.
The weekend began early on Saturday with the Keswick Mountain Festival Triathlon in a chilly but clear and ‘refreshing’ Derwent Water where nine club members set off with the daunting prospect of a very hilly bike and run course ahead once the swim was out of the way.
Tim Wylie headed the One Life contingency with a hugely impressive 3rd place overall and 1st in the Vet category. Well done Tim !!
Matt Cawood was the next club member to finish followed by Claire Jackson then a ding dong battle between Ross Maxwell and Brendon Jackson who were credited with exactly the same time !
Jan Oliver was next from the club and first overall in the ‘Super Vet’ over 50 category, well done Jan !!
Kath Smith had a good race finishing 4th in the same category. Husband Dave took the family bragging rights though by finishing ahead of Kath.
Rose Todhunter was next finishing 5th in the Super Vet category but like Jan, this was just the start of her weekend !!

On to Alnwick on Sunday and there were more notable successes for the club amongst our 13 participants. I managed to win overall and break the magic hour barrier by 13 seconds despite forgetting to put on my number belt in T1, phew !!
Once again Jan took the Super Vet title as did Nick Speed in the mens Super Vet competition. Well done chaps !!
Kevin Smith completed his first Triathlon and Rose Todhunter had another good race to complete the weekend double, bet she slept well Sunday night !!

The Darlington Triathlon also took place on Sunday with a strong One Life contingent present there too, again the results were good with Rob West taking second overall (but winning the Vet 40 category) and Richard Parker 3rd overall and 2nd Vet with just 2 seconds between them, Richard was fuming as he insists that he eased up in the final stages not knowing how close it was !!
The full results are not published yet but we’ll let you know when they are.
If anyone has any good photo’s of the weekends events please email them to oneliferacing@googlemail.com
And once again WELL DONE EVERYONE !!!
