The weather forecast was for a bright and sunny day although sadly the day dawned overcast and cold. Still that did not dampen the spirit of the dynamic One Life duo of Matthew Binns and Jeremy Cook who decided to open their friendly (well that’s what they tell everyone!) rivalry with a season opener in Skipton.
The boys had submitted the same swim, not ambitious but not slow either. In the end Jeremy took the honours for the first element mainly because Matt got caught in a traffic jam.
Not to be deterred by the 5 second advantage that Jeremy had created out of the pool, Matt regained the lead at the end of T1 with a fast transition.
The bike course is flat and fast and both athletes were soon in their rhythm with Matt working hard to stretch out a lead. Despite his best efforts Jeremy moved ahead and had soon opened up a lead of about 30 seconds.
This event was turning into a real game of cat and mouse.
Then just as the competition was hotting up, Jeremy encountered his annual mechanical problem! Having spent all of Saturday tinkering and lubricating the various parts of his bike, Jeremy experienced a catastrophic loss of gear selection forcing him to stop and undertake emergency repairs.
And with the lyrics of the famous Rolf Harris song playing in his head “Do you think I would leave you crying…..” Matthew thought “Absolutely! Now’s my chance and with a cursory “You alright mate?” headed of towards the turn for home leaving Jeremy wrestling with his gears.
The race was now just a matter of survival for both men. 5km of fairly flat run course with the only challenge, being to avoid tripping over the more capable, and talented runners trying to get passed.
In the end the boys made it across the line with loud vocal support from gathered friends and relatives that made all the difference and a great day all round.
Matt finished 57th and Jeremy 85th out of 137.
And as for the rivalry? Well bearing in mind the lead that Jem had when he broke down and the subsequent run times, the boys are going to mark this one down for Jem.
However, only 4 weeks to Darlington when the competition continues………
